Concept of Switching :-
In this networked world, switching is an essential function for data communication between specific devices. Data packets are sent to their destination through switching. To understand it better, know the types of switching -
1. Circuit Switching: In circuit switching, a path is arranged for the communication of data. This path remains in place until the communication is complete. This technique is widely used in telephone networks. For example, when someone calls someone, a dedicated path is created that remains in place until the call ends.
2. Packet Switching: In packet switching, information is broken down into smaller pieces called packets. Each packet contains information about the source and its destination in addition to the data. These packets move freely through the network and are reunited after reaching their destination. It is used a lot on the Internet.
3. Message Switching: In message switching, all the messages are sent at the same time. Each message is sent to its destination through different switches. This is an old technique and is rarely used in today's time, but it can still be seen in telegraph networks.
Virtual Local Area Network (VLAN) :-
VLAN is a networking technique that divides a physical network into many logical networks. Therefore, this technique helps in dividing large networks into smaller networks, which improves their visibility and security.
Benefits of VLAN :-
1. Security: Through VLAN, different network segments can be separated from each other so that important information is secured. For example, in a company's network, loan data is kept separate from other data.
2. Performance: Traffic is divided in the network through VLAN. This improves the performance of the network. Because the segments with less traffic are separate. And the segments with more traffic send data at high speed.
3. Flexibility: VLAN gives flexibility to the network administrator. So that he can divide the network according to his needs. This technology makes the expansion of the network easy in the future.
Trunking :-
In the trunking protocol, VLAN traffic is sent to many switches through a route. This link takes the VLAN traffic. It is called a trunk port. VLAN data is transferred between switches through trunking.
Trunking Protocol :-
1. IEEE 802.1Q: This protocol is a very common protocol. It tags the packets of each VLAN. So that the switch can know which VLAN each packet is connected to. This protocol is very easy to implement.
2. ISL (Inter Switch Link): INTER SWITCH LINK Protocol is a CISCO protocol. This protocol is considered a low protocol. This protocol is used in special networking setups.
Advantages of Switching, VLANs, and Trunking :-
1. Network Management: Through these three techniques, the network administrator gets help in running better. They track the network traffic by dividing it. Therefore, the performance of the network increases.
2. Improvement in security: Through VLAN, data is secured by separating many network segments. It is used in large organizations. Where data has to move between many departments.
3. Flexibility and expansion: Through VLAN and trunking, the network becomes very flexible and expandable. It will be used to make network expansion easier in the future.
4. Improvement in performance: Through switching and VLAN, network traffic is divided. And the capacity of the network is increased. With its use, data is sent at high speed. The performance of the network also increases.

Switching, VLANs, and trunking are very important for networking. These fulfill the needs of the network. Through these techniques, the network administrator gets improvements in network security, flexibility, and performance. By using them properly, a successful network is created.
